And this CD-ROM is now individually priced the same as the print set! Our library also purchased the print set on subscription in order to get the CD as a bonus, and it arrived this week also. Your experience doesn't make me eager to install try installing it on a PC either. Who has a good installation experience to report, either using XP or Vista? And what's involved in moving the program from one PC to another?

Ugh, I feel your pain. The Adobe Reader DRM stuff is sometimes frustrating, but at least it works better than this. I had thought about installing Windows 7 through Parallels, but I don't have any other reason to do so. I use the Anchor Bible Dictionary and other resources like The Context of Scripture through Accordance, and it works so wonderfully. Abingdon needs to get with the program, literally.

Nurgh. Ditto the excited anticipation of the CD. Ditto the Mac laptop. But I actually run a full version of Windows 2000 using Parallels on my Mac - for all intents and purposes, a "real Windows PC." (I do this, by the way, so I can use the decent and free e-Sword bible software.)

So, there was hope. The installation chugged along, gave me all the right messages, required a Windows reboot (nurgh, Windows) and loaded a little server applet next to the clock. So I clicked the desktop icon... and after a LONG pause my web browser coughed up an ugly report: "System Message 500 Internal Server Error / The function, 'license', did not succeed (no other error information given). / Error code: 0x80040154"

Rebooted. Tried again. Failed again. Uninstalled (not easy, by the way). Disabled antivirus software per instructions (what?!?). Reinstalled. Rebooted. Failed again. Rats. It doesn't appear to work, even in a clean and well-maintained installation of Windows 2000.

Why oh why isn't this simply a PDF file with copy protection built in? Or a standard ePub file? Or something useful??? Around my seminary (Duke Divinity School) at least half the students use Macs. Very bad choice, Abingdon.

I use a Mac these days because stuff designed for it generally works well and works the first time. I supported Windows PCs for a decade and was Microsoft Certified back in the day, and this has been just another reminder of the dark forces of copy protection and Windows ugliness. Sigh. When I get time I'll call the tech support number and see if they have any miracles on tap.

Thanks for the forum for venting - my soul is lighter, now. :^)

No, it's not quite that bad. You have to have Windows *plus* a CD-ROM drive to install the software. I typed it as they did, however, so it is in fact ambiguous.

I think the system works by loading text documents in Internet Explorer. I can't think of a worse way to distribute an e-book. It should run just fine on your laptop, however. I'm selling the CD, by the way, if you're interested.

Did I understand this right? You have to have a Windows installation disk to install this book? Suppose, like me Windows came preinstalled (to my disappointment) on my laptop, I have no installation disk, only a restore disk.... Thanks for the warning!

Bryan,
An update on Furman's iTunesU site...
Wade Shepherd is now assembling content for the Furman iTunesU site. If you know of faculty that would like to contribute that would be helpful. We now have approved graphics, and expect to request that Apple list the site once we have more content (and required metadata.) My understanding is that Apple is fairly strict about their listing requirements, and few institutions get listed on their first submission. However, we're hopeful that the Furman iTunesU site will be listed this semester.
