May 27th, 2009 by Bryan
I have been mostly absent from the ‘net for two or three weeks, but my new computer is here and I have a few weeks at home before we start traveling again. Imagine my pleasure to come back to 615 unread posts in my “biblioblog” category in Google Reader. Also, John Anderson has come over to the side of the angels: he’s moved his blog to Wordpress: http://hesedweemet.wordpress.com/. His current post is the text of his article, “Jacob, Laban, and a Divine Trickster.”

Welcome back, Bryan. Good to see you’ve returned.
Safe and sane travels!
I have a student who uses a MAC and the Hebrew does not render correctly on Safari – it does what many programs do. The diagritical marks are taken as separate characters. Is there a simple fix?
Bob, do you have a link to a website where your student sees the problem? I don’t know of any sites that use pointed Hebrew text. It’s hard to say what the problem is exactly, but I’m guessing it’s font related.
Bob:
I don’t know much about the MAC side of things, but what you describe has been my experience using Bibleworks fonts on windows. Are you talking about in a text document like a paper this is happening? If so, again I don’t know how MACs deal wtih it, but in word there is an option to embed any truetype fonts, which I always check, and the fonts stay with the document whether the other person has the font or not. Perhaps the SBL font website would help?
Bryan:
I just know you’re going to take my article with you on your travels, right?! A little leisure reading!
I have to go from memory – but I recall on his computer that Mechon-Mamre.org was OK and the BlueLetterBible.org was not. My own Sunday School blog (

There seems to be no problem for PCs. I have noticed poor rendering in Java based applications and this disappears if one installs SBL Hebrew. It may be that he needs a Hebrew font installed on his MAC and it would magically use it. I had wondered if I could tweak the html in my selected blogger skin to fix it, but my html skills don’t extend that far. Thanks for the questions.
I was happy to see that Accordance is keeping the sale open a nice long time. I am more likely to upgrade if I can take time to work through my finances and get acquainted with the benefits of the upgrade.
Your site seems to be working for me in Safari as well as Firefox for OSX. I’m guessing it is a font issue on your student’s end. They should be using one of the Unicode Mac fonts with Hebrew support. I am using Times.
Brian – that’s great thanks very much.
