The second major benefit is that Mellel creates long, complex documents with ease.  It has a robust “style” system that makes formatting very simple.  Just mark each part of your text with the kind of text it is, much like you do with HTML, and you can completely forget about formatting as you write.  After things are finished, or when you want to procrastinate, go through and set the styles for how you want things to look, and the document will transform itself before your eyes.  I know that Word has styles, but who uses those?  Mellel’s implementation is so much more robust and practical.

Additionally, these long and complex documents do not become unwieldy as they do in some other word processors.  You don’t have to break your book into different chapters any more, unless you want to.  The bottom line is that Mellel allows me to just write, darn it, and not worry about how the software is going to screw me at some point.

The best thing about the 2.6 update is that they now support Quicklook previews.  This is nice as far as Quicklook goes, but the real benefit to me is that now Mellel documents are viewable and searchable in DevonThink Pro.  I will write more about my document and research management workflow, but before now Mellel documents were dark spots in my DTP database.  This made me less excited about writing lectures and handouts in Mellel because I need to be able to search these files in DTP.  Now, things are as they should be, due to Mellel’s careful implementation of Apple’s inspired, genius Quicklook feature that was introduced in Leopard.

A final word about inter-operating with Word.  I have found the Word and RTF import and export to work well.  I actually exported my dissertation from Mellel (after a labor intensive transfer from the original LaTeX file, ugh) into Word format for my publisher and didn’t get any complaints.

Oh, did I mention that Mellel only costs $50, and $35 for an educational license?  That is in my opinion an unbelievable price for this software.  Try it out, and let me know what you think.  Be sure to start with the Guide (PDF) and the tutorials.  There is a bit of learning curve to get used to the interface and metaphor underlying the program.
